In the morning the advance party from the S. Lancs arrive to prepare to take over the position, this being commenced at 1530 hrs.
Bn moved to the assembly area near LE MESNIL whilst 2/RUR put in the attack on CAMBES. The Bde Comdr was forward with 2/RUR with whom communication became difficult and the Div. Comdr. placed the Commanding Officer in command of the Bde.
On getting news that that RUR had got so far but were pinned down, the Bn put in an attack with two Coys forward. This met with a certain amount of M.G. fire and in the later stages enemy mortar fire which caused some casualties.
Following the success of the attack, contact was made with 2/RUR and mopping up & consolidation was carried out immediately. -

Brigade ordered to capture St Coutes but met opposition in Cambes. 2nd RUR attacked first but met heavy opposition from 12 SS Hitlerjugend panzers. KOSB crossed a wheat field and attacked the flanks at bayonet point.
"My dad was a signaller so tended to be around him (Rennie) a lot with his massive wireless pack. As a matter of fact that's why he was partially deaf; on the attack at Cambes wood Rennie's jeep took a hit, Rennie was blown clear but my father was nearby and the blast knocked him against a tree".
Rodger Moffet, son of 1st KOSB veteran
"General Tom Rennie on recce in his jeep with ADMS (Assistant Director Medical Services) blown up on my Hawkins grenades necklace protecting our front. The GOC staggered over saying, 'As one Rennie to another, that was entirely my fault'. But I was consoled my Hawkins had been so effective".

"We stayed until the morning of the 9th when we were relieved by the S Lancs while the Royal Ulster Rifles (RUR) attacked Cambes Wood. At 18.00 the Battalion was ordered to pass through the RUR who had reached their objectives but were pinned down by heavy machine Gun, and Mortar Fire. The Battalion attacked after passing through the RUR and were met by machine gun fire and heavy mortar fire, but all Coys successfully reached their objectives. The Battalion suffered several casualties mainly from mortar fire."
