Sjt G. A. Coupland

George Alexander Coupland was born in May 1920 in Tongland, Dumfries. His Mother's maiden name looks to be Bodle.


He enlisted in November 1938 in Dumfries and his trade on enlistment was Farm Worker. He was 5 foot 10.5 inches and weighed 148lbs. His eyes were blue and his hair was described as 'fair'. He was attested to the Scots Guards primarily and then transferred to KOSB in December 1938


His Service Record states that he was part of the BEF and was 'struck off strength' on 1st June 1940.


He married Dora S F K Hawkins in June 1941 in Dorchester, Dorset.


He attended Small Arms School in January 1941 at the rank of Corporal. He was made acting Sergeant in August 1942.


After being wounded in Normandy he was evacuated back to the UK and then posted to the 1st Bttn Liverpool Scottish.


He was discharged from the Army in June 1946.


He died in Feb 1975 in Calgary, Canada.
