The First French Beach: 1st KOSB at Dunkirk by sister01 People in story: John Sisterson Location of story: Dunkirk Background to story: Army Article ID: A2317321 Contributed on: 19 February 2004 My father John Sisterson enlisted in the 1st Battalion Kings Own Scottish Borderers in 1932. After tours of duty in Palestine (now Isreal)and Malta he was trained as a electrician to work on London's undeground in 1939. He never completed his training and was called back to his regiment in September 1939. The KOSB's as part of the 9th Brigade of the 3rd Infantry Div. Was sent to France with the BEF. Most of the Phoney war was spent by my father around Lille in NE France. At the out set of the german offensive in 1940 my fathers unit was moved up into Belgium to meet the oncoming Germans. The KOSB's along with other regiments fought various rear guard actions back towards Dunkirk with the ultimate action being fought at Furnes on the french Belguim border along with other such units as the Guards regiments. After this rear guard action which was fought withbullet and bayonet, my father and his fellow soldiers were directed to march towards Dunkirk and then left by their officers. My father via the beaches arrived at the main harbour. He states all the stuka and other bombardment had ended other than sporadic fighting. He and his fellow borderers ended up awaiting to be taken prisoners of war. Fortunately HMS Malcolm made a final run into the Mole. My father and his friend were ordered to carry a stretcher with a wounded soldier onboard. That is how he made it back to England. There are other stories he has not told me which relate to Dunkirk but I am sure they are no different to others that experienced those events. The second French Beach was Le on sur Mer, Sword Beach Normandy June 6th 1944 07.00 and there in lies another story. John sisterson is alive and well at the age 87 years he is my father and my hero! © Copyright of content contributed to this Archive rests with the author. SMAKT Thursday 19 October 1944 Next Next Start Location: SMAKT End Location: SMAKT D-Day+ 135 19 October 1944 Again heavily shelled and mortared all day. Up till today the forward Pl of C Coy and the standing patrols of A Coy were under constant observation from the railway or from just behind it. We stopped this by Arty fire put down just over the railway, and then the rapid occupation of forward positions before the enemy had recovered from the effect of the shelling. This was accomplished with success and C Coy established an OP in house at 795325, which observed across the railway but was rather restricted in its all round observation. There was slight enemy activity or movement to the East of the railway. Enemy strongpoint at 810320 established by OP and engaged by 25 pdr Bty. A Coy provided a fighting patrol and C Coy two recce patrols which established that the enemy were in positions at 789331, 800324 and at 799321. B Coy recce patrol heard the enemy in the South East corner of orchard 799310. Several harassing targets were engaged by our 25 pdr Bty during the night usually bring back answering fire to some extent. Contact patrols to the right and left. Corporal Casualty Information Corporal GEORGE TALLON Service Number Age Date of death 3607626 21 Wednesday, November 01, 1944 Company: Researching Son of Richard Harrison Tallon and Daisy Tallon, of Burneside, Westmorland. War Service details: Original Regiment joined- (Based on their Service No). The Border Regiment 1st Bttn KOSB location on day of death (According to War Diary) SMAKT, Holland George Tallon was born on the 16 March 1923 in Burneside, in Cumbria. There is a full biography on the Overloon War Chronicles site and some lovely photos and letters > here 1st KOSB War Diary for the date of his death At 0320 C Coy asked for Q3 to be put down (steel factory). An enemy patrol of six or seven men was pinned down by fire from 14 Pl in the area just North of the strip of trees 796323. The patrol fired a white and then a green verey light from the area of the rly in front of 14 Pl farm, where upon 14 Pl were heavily stonked by 8.1 mortar. Our 3" mortars then fired 50 rounds on area of the rly at 799325. Then Q3 followed by the Southern half of 943 DF task by 33 Fd Regt. At 0620 C Coy heard enemy movement on the East of rly and asked for Q3 and Q1. The 33 Fd Regt obliged us promptly. C Coy reported that they had heard moaning coming from the area where they had shot up the enemy patrol. A short time afterwards C Coy fired on two of the enemy seen dragging a third with them. Shortly after mid-day A Coy reported hearing movement of heavy tracked vehicles at 800322. As we had been told to expect a counter attack, this sounded ominous. We stonked the spot heavily however and the movement ceased. At 1630 A Coy standing patrol reported one explosion 200 yards to the East of the level crossing at 799320. There was no report as of a gun so we concluded that it was a demolition. At 1845 a rapid stonk was put down on HOEVE VICTOR. Several sentries reported having seen a machine like a glider going from North to South across our front at about 1930 hrs. D Coy standing patrol during daylight reported occasional signs of enemy movement, however there was nothing new of importance. D Coy recce patrol under Sgt Batey were fired on by five of the enemy in the South East corner of orchard forward of D Coy. Share In Memorium Memorial OVERLOON WAR CEMETERY II. B. 5.
