William Chelley was born on the 5th December, 1922.

We do not have a War Diary for the date of William's death (as the last entry is the 31st May 1945) but his death is listed as 'accidental' in the official records.

His death is mentioned in the September 1945 edition of the Borderers Chronicle. "It is with much regret that we have to record the death of Corpl. Chelley of A Company who was accidentally shot by an American soldier while on duty at the station." (The Battalion had sent a party of 1 officer and 60 O.R.'s to help with the entraining of Russian displaced persons at Haltern station, working under command of 2nd Middlesex Regiment)
