James McPhilemy was born in Possilpark, Glasgow, November 1924 to Matthew and Ellen McPhilemy. He was the first son born and second eldest of 16 brothers and sisters.

He left school at 15 and worked as an apprentice sheet metal worker for Yarrow Shipbuilders in Yoker, Glasgow.

James was killed in action 17th June 1944 whilst the Battalion was fighting in Cambes En Plaine. He has a memorial page here
