9th Infantry Brigade War Diary

During this period the Bde remained in close contact on the western perimeter of TROARN with the enemy consisting of elements of 346 Div and 21 Pz Gr Regt in strong prepared posns. As at CAMBES, contact was very close and bn localities were subjected to daily shelling and mortaring, vigorous measures to counter which being taken by btys of 33 Fd Regt RA affiliated to bns.

Bde HQ moved to area PRE BARON 126705 on 22 JUL, 1 S LAN R relieving 2 LINCOLNS, who were withdrawn to ESCOVILLE, a short distance from the front line for 48 hrs rest.

Patrolling on all bn fronts gradually built up a picture of the enemy disposns and 2 E YORKS and 2 LINCOLNS successively sent nightly fighting patrols to the church 1569, which was occupied by neither side continuously.

Useful infm was gained from Polish deserters and PW.

A continual succession of shell and mortar reports enabled our own guns and mortars to counter enemy harassing effectively.

The bde disposns having been taken up hastily as a result of the battle for TROARN, adjustments were necessary, but the final disposns at the time the bde was moved to a bivouac area at BIEVILLE on 31 JUL were as on Trace att as Appx ‘D’.
