Son of Robert and Hannah Main, of Langholm, Dumfriesshire.

Played Rugby for Langholm Rugby club and, prior to joining the Army, he worked as a printer for the 'Eskdale Advertiser'.
His Uncle, John Main, was killed on the Somme in July 1916.

Joined the Army in 1940 and was posted to the KOSB shortly after their return from Dunkirk. Was wounded in the legs whilst on exercise in 1942.


Extract from War Diary on date of death:


Movements of enemy tracked vehicles were heard in morning by forward Company.


Enemy shelling and mortaring continued at intervals with a heavy concentration in the afternoon.


Recce patrols went out in daylight and at night.


PW brought in by "C" Company.


One shell falling near Bn HQ caused 4 casualties.


Reinforcements arrived at night. Most sent to "B" and "C" Companies.
