Pte R.M. Spratt

Roger Mather Spratt was born in June 1916, in Blythe, Northumberland. Son of William and Annie Spratt.


In the 1939 Register, he is living in Bedlington, Northumberland and his occupation is listed as 'Screening coals at waste above' (Mine worker).


He enlisted in March 1940 and was 4 foot 10.5 inches and weighed 111lbs. His eyes were blue and hair was brown.


He was posted to 1st KOSB in June 1940 when they were in Shepton Mallet.


He married Annie Craig in Newcastle in October 1942.


He was wounded in August 1944 during Operation Bluecoat and the attack on Vire and Vaudry. You can read more about the action, and the cost, here.


He was discharged from the Army in February 1946. At the time of claiming his medals, in 1950, he was living in Blyth, Northumberland.

*In July/August 1942 he passed the Army test for the trade of Shoemaker.
