GEIJSTEREN Monday 22 January 1945 Next Next Start Location: GEIJSTEREN End Location: GEIJSTEREN D-Day+ 230 22 January 1945 Uneventful night. At 1530 the 2 RUR on the left discovered tracks of a small party of enemy near the railway, from civilian reports. Eventually 2 white ration bags and a loaf of bread were discovered near a haystack, which looked as if it had been slept in. The track led from the river at 902158 30 yards to the North of Bn HQ and up the railway. No return tracks were found. During the afternoon the advance party of Ox & Bucks L.I. of the 6th Airlanding Bde arrived. At 2015 Sgt Ferguson took a patrol and followed the tracks down to the river, where they lay for about ten minutes, but could hear no noise. While returning by the same route, the patrol had reached 893166, when through "C" Coy fwd pl at KALDENBROEK came three men, answering the challenge with a few words of English. The patrol at once went to KALDENBROEK and eventually discovered that none of our patrols were anywhere near "C" Coy at the time, so they chased these men and followed them down to the river bank where there were marks of boats. About an hour later an enemy patrol 20 strong attacked KALDENBROEK with panzerfausts, schmeissers and grenades but were driven off, having at least two of their number wounded, one of whom was dragged back with them screaming. The other wounded man was captured and among other things disclosed his regt (1226) his coy positions and other useful information. Again movement of tpt was heard in the VELDEN area. In daylight OPs saw movement 9015, 9017, 9117. Lance Serjeant Casualty Information Lance Serjeant THOMAS WILSON Service Number Age Date of death 3185445 34 Thursday, October 19, 1944 Company: Researching Son of Thomas and Polly Wilson of Benwell, Newcastle. War Service details: Original Regiment joined- (Based on their Service No). King's Own Scottish Borderers 1st Bttn KOSB location on day of death (According to War Diary) SMAKT, Holland Thomas Wilson was born on the 5th of November, 1909 in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne. *CWGC has put his age on headstone at 25 years old when he died. However, he joined 1st KOSB in 1928 (and his Service No. tallies with that year) so believe this to be an error. The original headstone stated 34 years old. Before the War he was a Coal Miner. He has a full biography on the Overloon War Chronicles website here 1st Bttn KOSB War Diary entry for the date of his death Again heavily shelled and mortared all day. Up till today the forward Pl of C Coy and the standing patrols of A Coy were under constant observation from the railway or from just behind it. We stopped this by Arty fire put down just over the railway, and then the rapid occupation of forward positions before the enemy had recovered from the effect of the shelling. This was accomplished with success and C Coy established an OP in house at 795325, which observed across the railway but was rather restricted in its all round observation. There was slight enemy activity or movement to the East of the railway. Enemy strongpoint at 810320 established by OP and engaged by 25 pdr Bty. A Coy provided a fighting patrol and C Coy two recce patrols which established that the enemy were in positions at 789331, 800324 and at 799321. B Coy recce patrol heard the enemy in the South East corner of orchard 799310. Several harassing targets were engaged by our 25 pdr Bty during the night usually bring back answering fire to some extent. Contact patrols to the right and left.
