HIS STORY

Geoffrey Chrichton McCreath was born in May 1924.

Before the War he was a Rugby player, a grain merchant and a member of the Home Guard in Berwick.

He joined the Army in October 1942 and was commissioned in the KOSB in November 1943.

In April 1944 he went south with the road advance party for Exercise HANDS UP, the Battalion's move from Selkirk to its pre-invasion camp near Wickham, Hampshire, representing C Company.

In the C Company reorganisation, November 1944, he went to D Company.

He was among the officers who rejoined the Battalion during April 1945 after recovering from wounds, and was welcomed back to D Company. (Borderers' Chronicle, June 1945, pp.58, 63)

He was later promoted Captain and became second-in-command. (Borderers' Chronicle, September 1945, p.112)

He was discharged from the Army in June 1946 at the rank of Captain and listed as KOSB/1st Northumberland.

At the time of receiving his medals in 1948, he was living in Berwick on Tweed.

He married Margaret McWhir in July 1952, in Edinburgh.

He returned to Normandy for the 40th Anniversary in June 1984 with some of his old comrades.

Geoffrey died in October 2002, in Berwick On Tweed, at the age of 78.
