EXERCISE HANDS UP
-
Selkirk to West Walk, near Wickham, Hampshire
Britain

1st KOSB Training march - circa 1941
"HANDS UP" was not an exercise in the field. It was the code name for the real thing: the move of 1st KOSB from its billets around Selkirk in the Scottish Borders to Camp A.14 at West Walk North, a tented camp near Wickham in Hampshire, ready for the invasion.
The move went in stages. A road advance party under Maj R.E. Laurie was ordered south on 2 April to prepare the camp. The main road party followed with the Battalion's vehicles and anti-tank guns, staging at Carlisle, Wellington and Cirencester, and the rest of the Battalion went by troop train from Selkirk and Galashiels, each train taking about sixteen hours to reach Fareham.
The War Diary records the road party leaving on 7 April, Good Friday, while the rest of the Battalion attended church services; A Company and some of the tracked vehicles went by train on the afternoon of the 8th, and the main body leaving at 2300 hrs on the 9th, Easter Sunday, two days ahead of the timetable in the orders.
By 10 April the Battalion was in its new camp, and the next day every company was out on route marches.
The orders were marked TOP SECRET and already speak the language of D-Day: the Battalion is divided into those who would land "up to D x 6" and the "Main Residues" who would follow on D plus 9 and D plus 17. Capt J. Gray was Entraining Officer for the largest train, which carried Battalion HQ and three rifle companies.

OUR TAKE
The name sounds like a training scheme, but HANDS UP was the Battalion leaving Scotland for good. Within days of these orders 1st KOSB was under canvas in Hampshire, and eight weeks later it was in Normandy. The paperwork shows how far ahead D-Day was planned: men and vehicles are already sorted by when they would land ("up to D x 6", "D plus 9", "D plus 17"), and those who would not go at once were sent to Aldershot, Popham or Leeds. Some details bring it to life: nearly 300 bicycles, many of them folding "airborne" cycles, a warning that the RAF might practise low-flying attacks on the convoy, and orders to hand in the electric light bulbs "in bulk". The bicycle train (7/SC/23) was postponed indefinitely at the last minute. Capt J. Gray was Entraining Officer for the main train out of Selkirk on the night of 11 April, and a second Gray, Lt D Gray, went ahead with the advance party.
