Before the war he was employed as an engraver with a firm in Edinburgh. War Service details: Original Regiment joined- (Based on their Service No). The King's Own Scottish Borderers 1st Bttn KOSB location on day of death (According to War Diary) Troarn Extract from War Diary on the date of death: The attack on enemy positions forward of TROARN was continued. "C" Coy were to take Station at 158677 and "A" Coy the X roads 161676. Both attacks were met with heavy cross fire from MG's and though supported by tanks had to withdraw with heavy casualties. Bn resumed former positions and later in day heavy shelling and mortaring caused casualties. The Commanding Officer ( Lt. Col G. D. Renny ) having been previously wounded, left under orders from Brigadier and Major TG Coverdale took over command of the Bn. Casualties in the Bn during these two days fighting were 12 Officers and 140 Other Ranks. (I've a feeling my Grandfather was in B) From Official War Diary: 11th June 1944. Enemy tanks seen in LA BIJUDE area and a small number to 'B' Coys front. 29th June 1944. 2 deserters gave themselves up to 'B' Coy O.P. 04th July 1944. Enemy shelled Bn area in the afternoon, followed by spasmodic mortar fire in "B" Coy area causing one casualty. (Rawlins) 10th July 1944. CAEN. Later in the day "B" Coy occupied the Barracks, which had been previously an enemy HQ of some size. 18th July 1944. The advance to TROARN was commenced and after reaching SANNERVILLE "D" & "B" Companies pushed forward encountering enemy MGs, whilst enemy shelling continued. After an attack by "B" Company the Bn occupied a position in orchard 150678. Consolidation was carried out. 24th July 1944. Reinforcements arrived at night. Most sent to "B" and "C" Companies. 27th July 1944. "D" & "B" Companies sent out patrols. 29th July 1944. Bn snipers were sent forward to "B" Company area to observe and pick off enemy in forward positions. 9th August 1944. A patrol by "B" Coy captured four enemy, identified as belonging to a motorised Pnr Bn on special service. 5th September 1944. "A" & "B" Coys moved to new position at ETREPAGNY, a village 5 kilometres distant. CANLoan Officers with 1st KOSB CDN601 Francis F. Andrew Rank in June 1944 Lieutenant Date joined 1st KOSB 23 July 1944 Joined after Troarn Nicknamed, 'F F'. He joined the Bttn after Troarn on 23 July 1944. He was 2/Ic of B Company and much loved for his humour when things got grim. He left to return to Canada in September 1945. Corporal Casualty Information Corporal JAMES MACKERETH Service Number Age Date of death 3604079 29 Sunday, 06 August 1944 Company: Unknown James Mackereth was born in 1915 in Ulverston, Lancashire. His Mother's maiden name was Glover. In the 1921 Census, he is living in Askham in Furness, Lancs and his father is a builder's labourer. War Service details: Original Regiment joined- (Based on their Service No). The Border Regiment 1st Bttn KOSB location on day of death (According to War Diary) Pissot "On the afternoon of the 1st August we received a warning to prepare for a long move. Reinforcements of three officers and one hundred other ranks appeared (*from The Border Regiment) and the day was fully occupied in sorting them out and in preparation for another battle. The Quartermaster's Department was working at full pressure to replace clothing and equipment, both sadly depleted by the events of July". WIG Wilson , A Short History of the 1st Bttn KOSB in North West Europe In an IWM interview with Leslie Gibson, A Company, 9 Platoon, he describes Corporal Mackereth being killed by a direct hit from an 88mm shell. Reel 2 here . War Diary for the date of death: Bn moved out in TCVs (Troop Carrying Vehicle) at 0500 hrs and arrived at assembly area 672379 at 0700 hrs. The 'O' Group moved to S.L. at 0815 and the attack with "C" Coy on left and "D" Coy on right commenced at 0845 hrs. By 0955 hrs MONTISANGER was occupied without opposition. Patrols were sent out to the main road and river S of PISSOT. Two bridges (675340 - 666340) reported blown. An attack on positions S of the river (sqs 6734, 6735) was ordered at 1700 hrs to start at 1800 hrs. This attack was carried out with "C" Coy on the right and "A" Coy on the left. The two coys reached their first objective and pushed on but were pinned down by enemy MG fire from flanks when approaching the railway (sq 6737). These two coys made this adv against fairly heavy opposition, almost completely unsupported. Owing to the blowing of the br (675340) and the speed with which the attack had to be prepared, it was not possible to get any sp arms to them except one tp of tanks which got over later in the evening, and, by a very gallant attack, saved the situation on "C" Coy front. One complete pl of "A" Coy is missing from this operation and many offrs and ORs of both coys were killed and wounded. Late that night orders were received from Bde that the Bn was to consolidate - if necessary withdrawing. The withdrawal of the two fwd coys was carried out and by first light the Bn was in position astride the bridge at 675340. Canadian - researching 1st Bttn KOSB location on day of death (According to War Diary) Pissot Willard Stanton Caseley Born in Mass' USA but crossed to Canada and joined up. He was part of the CANLoan program . Before joining the 1st KOSB on 23rd July, Willard was with the coastal artillery for 2 years (regiment not known). Was killed in his first attack. Son of Wilfred and Ada Kefford (nee Wyatt). Before the War, Eric was an Insurance Clerk in Derby. He married Barbara B Scott in July 1942. His younger brother, Ivor George Kefford, was lost at sea near Gibraltar in November 1942. War Service details: Original Regiment joined- (Based on their Service No).
