Before his War service, Francis was an apprentice Painter & Decorator to Mr J C Walker of Runcorn. War Service details: Original Regiment joined- (Based on their Service No). Private Casualty Information Private WILLIAM TIERNEY BALMER Service Number Age Date of death 3066248 21 Sunday, 06 August 1944 Company: Unknown Born in 1923 in Ayr, Scotland. War Service details: Original Regiment joined- (Based on their Service No). The Royal Scots 1st Bttn KOSB location on day of death (According to War Diary) Pissot War Diary for the date of death: Bn moved out in TCVs (Troop Carrying Vehicle) at 0500 hrs and arrived at assembly area 672379 at 0700 hrs. The 'O' Group moved to S.L. at 0815 and the attack with "C" Coy on left and "D" Coy on right commenced at 0845 hrs. By 0955 hrs MONTISANGER was occupied without opposition. Patrols were sent out to the main road and river S of PISSOT. Two bridges (675340 - 666340) reported blown. An attack on positions S of the river (sqs 6734, 6735) was ordered at 1700 hrs to start at 1800 hrs. This attack was carried out with "C" Coy on the right and "A" Coy on the left. The two coys reached their first objective and pushed on but were pinned down by enemy MG fire from flanks when approaching the railway (sq 6737). These two coys made this adv against fairly heavy opposition, almost completely unsupported. Owing to the blowing of the br (675340) and the speed with which the attack had to be prepared, it was not possible to get any sp arms to them except one tp of tanks which got over later in the evening, and, by a very gallant attack, saved the situation on "C" Coy front. One complete pl of "A" Coy is missing from this operation and many offrs and ORs of both coys were killed and wounded. Late that night orders were received from Bde that the Bn was to consolidate - if necessary withdrawing. The withdrawal of the two fwd coys was carried out and by first light the Bn was in position astride the bridge at 675340. CANLoan Officers with 1st KOSB CDN611 Willard Caseley Rank in June 1944 Lieutenant Date joined 1st KOSB 23 July 1944 Killed in Action on 6th Aug 1944 Willard Stanton Caseley was born in Mass' USA but crossed to Canada and joined up. Before joining the 1st KOSB on 23rd July, he was with the coastal artillery for 2 years (regiment not known). Willard was killed in his first attack on the 6 August 1944 around Vaudry. Lieutenant Casualty Information Lieutenant MALCOM RUDOLPH ROSE Service Number Age Date of death CDN/502 26 Sunday, 06 August 1944 Company: Unknown Son of George Edward and Margaret Mae Rose, of Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, Canada War Service details: Original Regiment joined- (Based on their Service No). Canadian - researching 1st Bttn KOSB location on day of death (According to War Diary) Pissot Malcolm Rose served as a Lieutenant with the Royal Canadian Infantry Corps as a CANLOAN Officer. He was a battle drill instructor in camp Sussex, NB. posted to 1st KOSB on 1st of July. Was killed while leading a patrol over river Alliere. In early August of 1944 the 1st King's Own Scottish Borderers encountered the German resistance near Estry in Normandy. Heavy fighting continued around Estry between August 5th and 8th. On August 5th the Germans crossed Estry under heavy shelling of the British artillery and on August 8th German artillery stormed Estry to prevent the British from entering the town. The battle ended in this area of France on August 13th when the Germans pulled back. "The Liberty Ship was carrying 562 Troops from 28 different units, 63 Crew plus vehicles, large quantities of ammunition and high explosives. Three miles off Dover, it was hit by two 16 inch shells filed from German gun batteries 20 miles away at Calais. 45 minutes later, the Master gave orders to abandon Ship." The Dorsetshire Regiment 1st Bttn KOSB location on day of death (According to War Diary) Cambes Extract from War Diary on date of death: Enemy shelled Bn area in the afternoon, followed by spasmodic mortar fire in "B" Coy area causing one casualty. The rain continued in showers and after several days had made ground conditions bad. "C" Coy sent out raid to GALMANCHE. Party A was successful and overran an enemy platoon or section posn. Lieut Raines the officer commanding this party was killed. The party was rallied and brought back very ably by Cpl Cameron. No prisoners taken as enemy ran away but several enemy casualties claimed. Party B ran into what was at first thought to be a minefield, and withdrew. Later it was thought that this was some form of warning device as the explosion on trip wires caused no casualties but MGs all along the GALMANCHE defences opened up In a letter to the parents, the KOSB padre wrote, " We have laid him to rest in the garden of an old French house; the grave has been marked with a cross."
