Signals Platoon

Towards the end of January we had been relieved of our commitments on the River Maas, and had been drawn back into Brigade reserve in the area of Horst, which was a small Dutch town situated about four miles west of the river.

There an intensive training programme was started and February opened with this in full swing.

However, even now we had not completely finished with the Maas, for on the 4th we were ordered to send a recce patrol across the river, in order to bring back information about the river-line defences.

The patrol was timed to cross the river during the early hours of the night of the 5th and was to be led by Lieut. Walker of C Company. Unfortunately, he was wounded on the night of the 4th, while carrying out his preliminary reconnaissance and L/Sergt. Scott, his deputy, took over command.
