Gillies

Hugh Stewart Gillies was born in December 1915 in New Abbey, Dumfries, Scotland. His Mother's maiden name was Stewart.

He was commissioned Second Lieutenant on 27 August 1936.

He was promoted to Lieutenant in August 1939.

He was a keen rugby player before the war and played cricket for the KOSB team after.

He married Christina Susan M Mead (WRNS) in January 1944 in Dorchester, Dorset.

He was made Temporary Major on 27 August 1944.

He was awarded the Military Cross in December 1944 and served with 1st KOSB until July 1945.

He left the Battalion in July 1945 for the Staff College at Haifa. (Borderers' Chronicle, September 1945, p.108)

He died in August 1990 at the age of 74 and is buried in his home town's cemetery. His rank on his gravestone is given as Colonel.
