Members of 9th Infantry Brigade cross the Meuse/Escaut Canal in Storm Boats

By August 1944 the 1st Battalion King's Own Scottish Borderers had been fighting in Normandy for more than two months. With the German armies broken at Falaise and falling back towards the Seine, the battalion moved to La Chapelle, near Flers, on 20 August and was ordered to train for one of the hardest operations in war: an assault river crossing.

On 21 August the rifle companies practised carrying, launching and crossing in Storm Boats on the lake at La Chapelle. The anti-tank platoon loaded 6-pounder guns and jeeps into them, and the transport drivers took their vehicles over a Class 9 raft on the lake and a Class 9 folding-boat (FBE) bridge on the river nearby. The equipment was the real thing, part of the operational allotment, and the CO warned that any damage could not be replaced.

The three documents below are a Secret cover letter signed by the Commanding Officer, Lt Col J.F.M. MacDonald, and two appendices. Appendix A sets out the equipment and the routes to it, code-named SNAKE and GOOSE. Appendix B gives the programme for the day. The training was aimed at the Seine, but the War Diary already doubted it would be needed.

WAR DIARY - 1ST KOSB

1 KOSB War Diary, 21 August 1944

The Bn carried out special training for an assault river crossing operation, using the equipment as follows:-

(a) Class 9 FBE Bridge

(b) 9 Close Support Raft

(c) Storm boats.

This trg was designed for an assault crossing of the SEINE. Owing to recent news bulletins, however, it does not appear probable that this will be necessary.

OUR TAKE
Lt Col MacDonald signed the cover letter himself rather than leaving it to the Adjutant, and the warning that damaged equipment "cannot be replaced" shows this was the real operational kit. It was all aimed at the Seine, yet by the time the War Diary was written up the news bulletins suggested the crossing would never be needed, and they were right: the Germans fled across the river faster than the battalion could follow. The training was not wasted. Three weeks later, on 11–12 September, 1st KOSB rowed 2nd RUR and 2nd Lincolns across the Escaut Canal in assault boats under mortar and Spandau fire, then crossed themselves at first light. Note too Capt Dishington, training the anti-tank platoon here, the officer who that same month gave a burial with pipers to the American airman 2nd Lt Thomas Lee Crow near Flers.
