At 0130 hrs contact was established by patrol between the Royal Warwickshire Regt and ourselves at road-track-junc 645139. Patrolling on similar lines to preceding day. Reports indicate that the drawbridge at HOGGEBRUG 708122 has been blown.

Carrier patrols went to MEIJEL in the morning and at dusk. No enemy were observed. A and D Coys cleared area 682128 - 702122 - 703078 - 720079. No enemy encountered.

C and D Coy recce patrols to 695156 and 697153. No enemy movement seen.

B Coy night recce patrol to HOGGEBRUG challenged by enemy. This was the most northerly point on the canal in our unit sector that showed any sign of enemy.

Warning order to move received 1915 hrs.

Nightly contact patrol with the Warwicks cancelled.

"Our chief activity while in Liesel was carrying out long distance patrols, to villages such as Meijel, or to the line of the Deurne Canal. Our front was thinly held and the Germans also patrolled into Meijel, looting food, and then returning across the canal to their positions. We collected a few prisoners and abandoned guns; our only casualties were caused by enemy shelling of the Church tower. One of the Dutch Resistance men was shot while patrolling and died in the Regimental Aid Post. All told, our four days in Liesel were relatively comfortable and much cheered by the hospitality of the people. It was all the more saddening then, to hear that at a later date — when the Americans were holding the village — a German counter attack recaptured it and that the place was destroyed".
