The inhabitants of this little village were extremely kind to us and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The news of the fighting was excellent and every day brought fresh word of rapid advances. For hours on end American transport tore along the main road, driven by grinning coloured troops and festooned with strings of German bullets. The villagers showered kindness upon us and, when news came through of the liberation of Paris, their delight knew no bounds. Billets were fairly good, and we could eat our meals in the open, eking out the army rations with apples from the orchards. We could sleep in peace or play football; good E.N.S.A. Concerts were given in the theatre at Flers and the Divisional Club had also moved into this town; our minds began to relax, and our appetite for life grew with the deepening certainty of Germany's defeat.
